Looking to make your backyard more private but don’t like the idea of installing a fence? There are plenty of ways for you to create a sense of privacy in your backyard that don’t involve putting up a fence. With these landscaping solutions you can create your own private oasis where you can relax and spend time with friends and family in peace.

Plant privacy hedges. Privacy hedges are evergreen shrubs that provide a wall of privacy around your property. Formal privacy hedges are made of the same type of column trees or hedges and require regular trimming to maintain their shape. Informal privacy hedges are simply a line of bushes that grow in a natural way. While they also require trimming, these hedges require less maintenance overall.

Layer plants and bushes. You can also create privacy in your backyard by planting multiple layers of trees, bushes, and flowers. With this approach you start with the taller plants in the back and add smaller layers in the front, creating a more cohesive landscape design that also provides privacy. This also allows light to filter through into your backyard.

Enhance your retaining wall. If you have a sloped yard that requires retaining walls, you can use these walls to add more privacy to your yard. This can be accomplished by increasing the height of the retaining wall, planting flowers or bushes on top of it, or adding large boulders. The natural extension of the retaining wall will allow you to keep your yard more private.

Add a trellis. Structures like trellis can prevent a clear view into your backyard and make it more private. They can be adorned with vines or climbing flowers which help to provide an additional screen for your yard. Adding a trellis can make you feel like you are in your own private oasis.

Build a water feature. Privacy means more than just preventing others from looking into you yard, it can also mean preventing them from hearing your conversations. The sound of running water that accompanies water features helps to provide ambient noise so that your conversations don’t leave your yard.
